I know he was a real character and told some stories about finding a lot of booze in a pill box one time. Sounded to me he was not only the armorer for the division, but the entertainment director as well. I would love to hear from anyone who can help me piece things together. After his death on Father's day 2002, I was and still am very devistated. He was not only a proud man, and I am very proud of him and everyone who served, he was my guidance, my best friend,and my father as well as my grandfather. Johnson was a member of the 65th Inf. Div. I can recall stories he used to tell me as a boy about crossing the Danube, his battle star, and linking up w/ the Soviet forces at the end of the war. Sadly, he passed away in Feb. 2002, leaving me w/ fond memories of his service and his pride in the "Battle Axe." I now have all his ribbons, photos and memorabilia, and even his "ike" jacket w/ the 65th Div patch on the combat designate right sleeve. Carraway, who came by to see me in Fort Collins, Colorado after he retired to Colorado Springs. And, incidently, I was visited by the widow of the leader of the 65th Div Band, Marvin Bostrom, a few years ago. I had not realized that I succeeded him as professor of music history at Colorado State. She showed me clippings of the meeting between members of the division band and the great composer of "The Merry Widow" opera (which I was conducting that night). I also mentioned that I was one of the youngest in the Div. Someone guestioned this too with a Jan 2, 1926 birthday. I beat him by exactly one month, Feb.2,1926. The question of the youngest was brought up at a reunion meeting about 7, 8 years ago. If you are younger or pretty near this age, let's hear from you. Young? When we are now 78, anything is young!!
