I'm a little sketchy about what he did in the 65th.
I'm wondering if any one remembers him.
I believe he was in the 260th, but I'm not sure. He spoke of a mission he was part of where a number of soldiers went cross-country for days, looking for some SS guys. He also spoke of the first firefight he was in where a German bullet passed through a tree and fatally wounded one of his friends.
He was a Staff Sergent when the war ended.

Aberdeen SD USAE-Mail: banjo_man48@hotmail.com 65th Div. Assn. Status: I am a family member of a 65th Division Veteran Relationship/65th Vet: Son Comments: Last year (July 2002) my wife and I made a trip back to Germany. While in the military I was stationed in West Berlin from Nov. of 1969 until Mar. of 1972. During this time, I came back to the States on leave to get married. My wife came back to Berlin with me and we spent the last few months there together before coming back to the States. We made a trip back to Berlin in July of last year to visit some of the old places that we remembered. I also wanted to travel to and see for myself some of the towns and places that my dad,Maynard Hanson,(565th Signal Co., 65th Division)had been through in 1945. One of the sights of interest that I wanted to see was the site of the forced labor subcamp at Ohrdruf, Germany. The site is now located on a German Military Reserve. I had to write a letter to the Commander of this post in order to get permission to get a tour of the site of the former Ohrdruf subcamp. When we arrived we were greeted by the commander. My wife and I met with him in his office and visited with him for an extensive time. During our conversation with him we found out that he is writing a history of the Ohrdruf area and is very interested in stories of soldiers who were in and around the Ohrdruf concentration camp back in 1945. My wife and I got a 1 1/2 hour tour of the area of the concentration camp and a tour of the site of a World War I prisoner of war camp that was also on the grounds. It was a very sobering feeling knowing that I was standing on some of ther very ground that my father had maybe passed over almost sixty years before! There were no real visible signs of the existence of the camp except for a couple of memorial markers that designated the mass graves of some 5000+ unfortunate souls. We then continued our travel to Regensburg, where my father had celebrated his 19th birthday on April 29th, 1945. Beautiful town! The next stop was Passau, once again a very beautiful city. From Passau we took a Danube River cruise to the Austrian city of Linz. Unfortunatly, time did not permit us to take a trip to Enns, Austria. My father has told me he had spent some time in the little town of Enns after the war as well. My wife and I then took a train back to Passau and then headed back to Berlin to come home to the States. This fall my wife, my father, myself and my mother are planning a trip to Germany so my father can revisit these same cities for the first time since 1945. I'm looking forward to it and I believe he is as well. Referred By: www.65thdiv.com

I happened along this website. I found a letter of his saying that he was a member of the 261st, weapons company "L" at Struth. He never talked about his service in the war in detail with me, but I have the history of the Division Vol. 3 and am looking through it for any mention of his name.
He was awarded the Bronze Star for his service but I don't know where or what it was for.
If anyone has information about him or remembers him, please contact me at the email address listed, (stoms@kc.rr.com). His name was Robert John McCarthy. He was a pfc. upon entering the war. He may have been at the reunion in Las Vegas in 1992 because that is when the book was dated.
Thanks for any response!
