I and three other soldiers arrived at Saarlautern about two days after the main unit arrived. We were greeted by an enemy artillery barrage that lasted till mid-night. After crossing Hitler's impenetratable Siegfried Line, I, Al Sperl, Ted Sullivan and others were assigned to ride shotgun on Gen. Patton's new Pershing Tanks, protecting them from snipers, Panzerfausts, ambush sites, etc. We were known as Patton's Raiders. We spearheaded for the entire 3rd Army, further out on the point than any other unit. Upon arrival in Linz, Austria we served as Honor Guard for General Patton, and again for General Walton H. "Bull Dog" Walker our XX Corp Commander. Gen. Patton told us: "I am proud of you! the one Honor which is mine, and mine alone, is that of having commanded such an incomparable group of Americans, the record of whose fortitude, audacity and valor will endure as long as history lasts."
