Comments: I am searching for information about the liberation of the area just south of Erfurt, Germany in early April 1945.

I am co-authoring a memoir with a Holocaust Survivor named Curt Allina who, following escape during the Death March from the Ohrdruf camp to Buchenwald, was picked up by an MP patrol probably somewhere southwest of Erfurt on 13 April 1945.

Without knowing his exact location, we think there is a high probability that he was in the zone where the 65th was operating while in reserve behind the 89th Division. Your historical overview section describes "mopping up stragglers at Arnstadt" at this time. We have reason to believe the outdoor holding facility ("cage") Mr. Allina was taken to by the MPs was located at Arnstadt, where the 65th CP was set up at this exact time.

For the sake of accuracy and the personal need to piece together details over six decades later, Mr. Allina wants to establish more precisely where he was and what events were occurring around him (he certainly had no way of knowing at the time!). Of particular interest to Mr. Allina is the identity of a US army captain named Schreiber (first name unknown) who interviewed him at the prisoner holding pen and who showed extraordinary kindness and humanity in arranging for his needs. This encounter with Captain Schreiber has remained a powerful memory all these years.

We have no idea if Captain Schreiber was attached to G-2 of the 65th or another arm of Third Army (Counter Intelligence Corps?) operating at the prisoner cage. There is also a possibility Schreiber was attached to UNRRA (the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Admin). But there is no doubt he was a US Army captain.

To help us, I wonder if any vets of the 65th who were part of that last sweep into Central Europe have information relating to the following questions:

1. On or around 13 April 1945, was the 65th administering the Arnstadt "PW cage?" Is this where MPs in the area south of Erfurt took captured German prisoners and others (including escaped slave workers) who were picked up in the countryside?

2. Are there any 65th vets in your community who served in the division's MP platoon and who remember patrolling and picking up wandering DPs and various escaped slave workers?

3. Does anyone have any knowledge of UNRRA personnel arriving in liberated areas at this time and beginning their humanitarian work? On or about the 15th of April 1945, Captain Schreiber personally transported Mr. Allina and a fellow liberated prisoner by jeep about 80 miles west to Bad Nauheim and handed them over to an UNRRA team. Did the 65th have any official contact with UNRRA or was that handled at a different level at 3rd Army?

4. Finally, does anyone recognize the name of "Captain Schreiber" so that we could learn more about him?

Thank you for any help you can provide. With gratitude for the service the 65th performed in World War II, and also for your more efforts to tell the story of the campaign to liberate Germany,

Sincerely yours,

Daniel Kadden, PhD

He (along with countless other brave soldiers of the 65th) assisted in the liberation of Ohrdruf. Would his account be on the Internet? I've searched and searched for something - anything regarding this. I would more than appreciate any help. Thank you from one middle-aged daughter who misses her Dad more than words could express.

Comments: Hi, everyone. My dad passed away in 1985. His name was William H. (Harrison) Webb, from Bowling Green, Ky. His papers say TEC-5. Does anyone out there remember him? He brought back pictures of Dachau when he came home, so I think he was there at the end of the war. I'm gathering together some of Dad's pictures in uniform along with one of his halbert arm patches, and a copy of his discharge papers to frame and display and someday hand down to my son. To my great surprise, I discovered my dad should have received 2 bronze stars, a good conduct medal, a victory medal, and an army of occupation medal after the war. He never got them. Did all of you men get your medals? Any info would be helpful. I'm going to pursue getting Dad's medals to put in with his other things to display. Dad never talked about the war. I love and miss him, and I wish I had told him how proud I was of him-for his honorable service to his country. But I'm only now realizing how much that means to me. But it's not too late to tell you who are still here. Thank you for putting your lives on the line for us. Thank you for your sacrifice. You guys are ALL brave and wonderful. God bless each and every one of you! And thank you for making this Web site possible! It's really a comfort to me. Terry Harshman
